West Pokot County residents have been urged to embrace the construction of pit latrines in their homesteads.

Speaking at an event to celebrate hand washing day that was organized at Kodera primary school in Kapchok ward, Charles Otiende, an official from the health department said this will help reduce outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

Otiende also lauded the efforts by the residents of the Leyo sub-location for embracing the project of construction of pit latrines, funded by the Rotary Doctors organization.

“I urge our people to embrace the use of pit latrines to reduce the outbreak of diseases such as typhoid and cholera,” said Mr. Otiende.

On her part, the Rotary Doctors organization official Celina Wachiye expressed her confidence that the state of hygiene in the Leyo sub-location will now improve, while congratulating the county government through the health department for making the project a success.

“We are happy today because the Leyo-sub location has been declared open defecation free which means no one will use bushes to relieve themselves,” said Mrs. Wachiye.

Losam area Chief Felix Lodite termed the project a blessing to the residents of Leyo, an area that he said has had a big challenge concerning the issue of hygiene.

He called on the organization to implement the project in other areas of Kodolem and Kapiyen.

“I thank the Rotary Doctors organization for facilitating this project because now our people will be using latrines that will reduce disease outbreaks as a result of poor hygiene,” he said.
