West Pokot Residents Cautioned Against Heavy Rains

Residents of West Pokot County have been called upon to maintain caution amidst the heavy rains being experienced in the region.

The call has been made to resident in a move to curb possible disaster that may be witnessed in the County.

Meanwhile the County has reported at least a number of cases of residents being swept away by floods in Lomut and Wei Wei areas.

According to reports issued by the County Government at least five people lost their lives after being washed away by floods in Lomut and Weiwei areas.

A senior officer in the disaster department of West Pokot County David Chepelion has further warned residents against crossing rivers that have flooded.

“Heavy rain continues to be witnessed in the country and its effects are clear. Citizens should be careful this season and not cross rivers that have flooded arbitrarily,” said Chepelion.

In addition, Chepelion encouraged residents not to use dirty water, and to ensure that they sleep inside treated nets to prevent diseases such as malaria and cholera.

The County official further revealed the County government’s plan to developing strategies to ensure residents get treated mosquitos nets.

“The rainy season is accompanied by various diseases such as cholera and malaria, so citizens should pay close attention to hygiene and sleep inside a net to prevent these diseases,” he said.

At the same time, he asked ward managers, chiefs and local elders to ensure that they provide information to the relevant department if they witness any case of landslides in their representative areas.

“I encourage ward managers, chiefs and local elders to provide information about any landslide they witness to prevent disaster,” he added.
