West Pokot county government through the department of agriculture is set to officiate the launching of maize seeds on Monday 18th Mar 2024 in Makutano Stadium.

This will benefit at least 136,000 farmers from West Pokot County, every household receiving 2kg packets each.

Speaking in his office, West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin said that after the mega launch of maize seeds in Makutano on Monday, it will be immediately transported for distribution at the location level.

“We expect every household to benefit. I ask the responsible local administration to distribute fairly to avoid unnecessary blames. As the government of West Pokot we are launching seeds purposely for food security,” said Governor Kachapin.

In addition Kachapin stated that his government will also distribute perennial crops like avocado and mango seedlings to sustain the lives of the community.

At the same time Kachapin urged farmers to prepare their farms for planting season.

“We urge our farmers to make sure they prepare their farms early enough for planting,” he said.

On the other hand, the West Pokot County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture and Livestock Wilfred Longironyang cautioned those who have been assigned to distribute maize seeds to distribute fairly to all households.

“We should all remain watchful and vigilant during seed distributions for the benefit of our people,” said Longironyang.
