The former West Pokot County Senator Samuel Poghisio has expressed his dissatisfaction over the new funding model being used to fund the university students.

Speaking to Kalya Fm Digital Mr. Poghisio said that the government was quick to introduce the new funding model without involving all stakeholders.

He said due to this, President William Ruto is finding it hard to explain it to students and parents as no or little public participation was done before the government embarked on its implementation.

“This new funding model is receiving resistance from the University students and parents because it was hurriedly implemented. There was little or no public participation and that is why the president is finding it difficult to explain the model,” said Mr. Poghisio.

In addition, Mr. Poghisio criticized the way the students are placed in different bands according to their families’ financial status, saying that this move perpetuates caste discrimination.

“I don’t support the way these students are being grouped according to their financial status. This will lead to discrimination,” he said.

At the same time, Poghisio said that the funding model will promote corruption, where students from financially able communities may benefit more while those from poor families remain disadvantaged.

“This model will contribute to corruption as those officials that will be classifying students into bands may be compromised,” he added.
