West Pokot County is the only County lagging in the implementation of the government’s affordable housing project which is being developed across the country.

Speaking to Kalya Digital West Pokot County commissioner Khalif Abdulahi said this is due to people occupying public land in the areas where the project is set to be implemented.

Khalif said that the areas where the project should be implemented have already been identified and what remains is to begin the implementation.

“It is only in West Pokot in the whole country where we are lagging in implementing affordable housing projects. This is because people are occupying public land where the project is supposed to be implemented,” said Mr. Khalif.

He asked those occupying public lands to vacate and allow the government to implement the project so that the residents of West Pokot County can also benefit as is the case with Kenyans in other Counties.

“I want to ask those occupying the public land to start vacating before we move them. We want the residents of this County to benefit from the project as it is to Kenyans in other Counties,” he said.

At the same time, Khalif expressed the need to create a law that will control mining in West Pokot County to ensure that the residents benefit.

He said that most of the investors who have no mining license have been evading paying revenue while taking advantage of the minerals.

“Investors have been exploiting this county by mining without paying revenue. We must put in mechanisms in line with the Mining Act to ensure our people benefit,” he added.
