Kapenguria Women’s Prison Organizes a Women’s day Event for Inmates
By Benson Aswani,
The management of Kapenguria women’s prison in Pokot West county has organized an event to celebrate women’s day in the prison one day before the day is celebrated across the world.
The officer in charge of the prison Regina Chematui stated that the event was attended by people from different places to give the mothers in the prison the opportunity to interact with them and feel that they are still important in the society.
Likewise, while making her address she called on the community not to isolate people who are incarcerated, and instead visit them and get to know their situation, a step she said is important for them psychologically.
“We decided to organize women’s day for these prisoners to give them the opportunity to interact with people from outside the prison, this and also to make them see themselves as important in society. What I am asking for the relatives of these prisoners is that it is important to visit them because it will benefit them psychologically,” said Chematui.
At the same time, Chematui called on mothers in the county to engage in legally acceptable activities to earn their daily livelihood, and to distance themselves from issues that may lead them to find themselves in prison.
“I am asking mothers to separate themselves from issues that may lead them to find themselves in prison, such as drinking alcohol, and instead get involved in activities that will benefit them in life,” he said.
