Shortage of JSS Teachers Raises Concern On The Future Of The CBC Curriculum

By Benson Aswani,

Primary school head teachers in West Pokot County have raised concern over the shortage of Junior Secondary School teachers, a situation that is jeopardizing the full implementation of Competency-based curriculum (CBC).

Speaking to Kalya Digital on Wednesday, Nasokol primary school head teacher Cecilia Ngige said that the head teachers are forced to use primary school teachers to fill the gaps

Consequently, due to the shortage, Mrs. Ngige has proposed to equip primary school teachers with degrees to teach JSS classes.

“We do not have enough JSS teachers at the moment to offer services to our children. This has forced us to use primary school teachers to fill gaps,” said Mrs. Ngige.

In addition, Mrs. Ngige complained of the lack of enough classes to meet the large number of pupils.

She said currently her school has more than 100 pupils in one class, calling on the government to address the situation.

“We are experiencing a big shortage of classes where currently we have more than 100 pupils in one class. I call on the government to hasten addressing this challenge,” she said.

However, Mrs. Ngige has assured the parents that despite the challenges, the school is putting in place strategies to ensure that grade 9 pupils who will soon be joining the school are provided with a conducive environment for their studies.

“Despite of all the challenges, we are doing our best to make sure that grade 9 pupils who will be joining us soon are well catered for,” she said.
