Early pregnancy Identified as a Major Obstacle Education in West Pokot
By Emmanuel Oyasi,
The girl child education in West Pokot County is still facing challenges with early pregnancies being cited as a major obstacle despite efforts from the government and various stakeholders to ensure that these cases are dealt with.
According to St. Bakhita girl’s high school Principal Grace Kakuko, 25 students did not report to school since the schools reopened for the second term.
She revealed that some of the girls were found pregnant after the school investigated their whereabouts.
Mrs. Kakuko asked parents to be keen with their parental responsibilities especially on girls to allow them to fulfill their dreams through education, as according to her, most of the students are impregnated while at home.
“We are still facing early pregnancies among our girls despite all efforts by stakeholders to make sure these vices are dealt with. In our school, for instance, 25 girls did not report back and upon our investigations, we discovered that some of them are pregnant,” said Mrs Kakuko.
She further called on area chiefs and local elders to lead efforts to find the missing students including those who are already pregnant and bring them back to school.
The Principal said that as teachers, they are ready to receive them to continue with their studies and fulfill their dreams.
“I ask our area chiefs to find the missing students and bring them back to school. As teachers, we are ready to receive them back,” she said.
