Amudat Farmers Appeal to Gov’t For Maize Seedling Donations

Amudat district small scale farmers are appealing to the Central Government through local government to donate maize seeds to the residents.

According to the residents,the planting season is due while they do not have any seedlings yet.

The residents are now requesting the donations through the Department of Agriculture and Irrigation ahead of the long rains planting season, to boost agricultural production and enhance livelihoods.

Speaking to Kalya Digital news from Karita Subcounty, the farmers led by Charles Akodoki said as the rain has started farmers should prepare their farms.

“We have prepare our farms and we have no maize seeds to plant, our government should now remember us in donating seeds”said Mr Akodoki.

On the other hand he asked the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) to unveil the three tractors that will subsidize the cost of land ploughing

“We ask our RDC to lend us three tractors in the district to help plough our farms to reduce the cost of hiring private tractors”said Mr Akodoki.

Likewise, Peninah Paulo one of the farmers from Alakas emphasized on importance of farmers getting maize donations from the government since they cannot afford maize seed further adding that they huge depend on maize flour.

“We lack money for buying seeds for planting our small farms at home,we ask government to help us” said Peninah.

Worth noting is that the government of Uganda in the past years has been donating maize seeds to small scale farmers however according to the residents the trend has taken a different turn this planting season.
