A Section of Farmers in WestPokot to Benefit from Ksh 27M
By Benson Aswani,
West Pokot County Governor Simon Kachapin has presented at least Ksh 27 Milion to a section of West Pokot famers to facilitate production in the County.
The County boss on Monday 20th gave the funds to at least 180 groups of farmers from 9 wards within West Pokot County.
According to Kachapin the money is set to develop various agricultural projects under the emergency locust response program.
Speaking at the time of issuing the check in an event organized at the agricultural hall in Kapenguria on Monday, Governor Kachapin said the program aims to enable farmers to get involved in alternative agricultural activities.
He noted that the activities mapped out includes breeding and honey farming, especially considering that crop farming has been severely affected in the dry seasons and even floods.
“We have handed over a check of 27 million shillings to farmers from 180 groups in 9 wards of this county so that they can develop various agricultural projects. We have taken this step because for many years the cultivation of plants has been affected by drought and floods,” said Kachapin.
On the other hand, Kachapin noted that the farmers who received the funding will be given training on how to develop their activities to ensure that the county’s economy improves, promising to cooperate with the farmers in finding a market for their products.
“Officials from the Department of Agriculture will train these farmers to develop various projects to ensure better production. We as the government will cooperate with farmers to find a market for them, our main goal being to strengthen the economy of this county,” he said.
The funding which was hugely accepted by the farmers saw them praise the move the County Government to grow the Agricultural sector in West Pokot.
The farmers led by Eric Kalikwon said it will be very useful to strengthen the activities they are developing, and even help in facing the problem of hunger that has been affecting the residents of different parts of the county every summer.
“We thank the government for giving us this funding. You will help us a lot to ensure that we deal with the hunger bar which has become a problem in this county every summer season,” said Kalikwon.
