The body of a man suspected to have been swept away by floods has been found floating in Swam river in Kacheliba West Pokot county.

While confirming the incident, the Kacheliba police commander Victor Nzaka said that the deceased may have been swept away due to the heavy rain that has been witnessed in the area for the past two days.

Mr. Nzaka said that information about the discovery of the body of the man who remains unknown, was given to the police by residents in collaboration with the area chief.

Notably according to reports, the body of the deceased was discovered by residents on Wednesday 1st May at around 3pm.

“We received the information about the body of a man which was floating on Swam river at around 3pm on Wednesday. We suspect the deceased must have been swept away by floods from another area as he remains unknown to the locals of this area,” said Mr. Nzaka

The Swam area chief Shaaban Akida, has urged the residents to be careful during this rainy season and to ensure that they move to safe areas to prevent disasters that may be caused by floods.

“I ask our people to be more careful during this rainfall season and even move to safer places to avoid disasters that may be caused by floods that are being experienced in the country,” said Mr. Akida.

Meanwhile, this comes even as the government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced that 10 more people were killed by floods in the last 24 hours across the country, bringing the total deaths to 179 since the heavy rains started.

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, Mr. Mwaura said out of the 179 people, 164 are adults while 15 are children.

Mr. Mwaura further revealed that another 125 Kenyans have been injured and are receiving treatment in health facilities across the country as the rains continue to wreak havoc.

Meanwhile the Kenya Meteorological Department on Tuesday warned that Thursday and Friday would particularly experience heavy downpours.
