Police Launch Investigation Into Uninspected Meat Business In Makutano Town

Police in Kapenguria, West Pokot County are holding two butchers in custody for allegedly selling uninspected meat.

Kapenguria police Commander Richard Omanga said the meat being sold in a said butchery in the outskirts of Makutano town, was not slaughtered in a renowned slaughterhouse in Makutano, raising questions of its safety.

Mr. Omanga said the incident was reported to the police by the members of the public who doubted the safety of the meat, where the police accompanied by the public health officers arrived at the shop to determine its legality.

“This uninspected meat was found being sold in a butchery in Makutano town, after the members of the public reported it to the police officers,” said Mr. Omanga.

Mr. Omanga said that the suspects who are held at Kapenguria police station will be presented to the court to answer the charges of selling uninspected meat.

He further called on residents in Makutano to be keen and provide any information on suspicious meat business.

“We are holding the two suspects at Kapenguria police station and they are likely to appear in court to answer the charges of selling uninspected meat,” he said.

According to Bendera village elder Evans Nyachio, some butchers have been buying dead cows and selling meat to the public for quite some time, blaming one slaughterhouse in the area for running the business.

“We have an illegal slaughterhouse here at Bendera where dead cows are being slaughtered and sold to butcheries in Makutano town. It is high time now the law should take its course,” said Mr. Nyachio.
