Teachers In The Border Areas Of West Pokot County Calls On The Government To Hasten Security Measures
By Benson Aswani,
Cases of insecurity in the border areas of West Pokot County are mainly caused by the youths who are forced to drop out of school.
Led by Irene Reirei, teachers working in the border areas said most of the children whose parents were killed by bandits, drop out of school for lack of someone to support them pursue their education thus ending up in banditry.
Reirei called on the government to intervene and help those children to enable them to benefit from education as this will also help curb insecurity cases in the Kerio Valley region.
“Many children in the border areas of this county lose their parents at a tender age forcing them to join banditry due to lack of someone who can sponsor them to continue with their education,” said Mrs. Reirei.
At the same time, Reirei called on the government to strengthen the security of teachers who work in the border areas, as many of them have lost their lives at the hands of criminals.
In addition, she recommends that teachers who are sent to work in those areas be given training on how to use guns to defend themselves against bandits.
“Government should assure us of our security. Many of our colleagues have been killed by the bandits while others have fled to other areas in fear of their lives,” she said.
