By Benson Aswani,
Sigor Member of Parliament Peter Lochakapong has termed the launch of the Lomut irrigation Project as a solution to insecurity cases that have been a nuisance over the years.
Speaking to Kalya FM Digital on Sunday, Lochakapong said the project will attract many youths who have been involved in banditry as they will now turn to farming.
The lawmaker further said the move is in line with the government’s plan to ensure food security in the country.
He expressed his confidence that through the Lomut irrigation project, the challenges that residents have been undergoing due to drought will be a thing of the past.
“I want to thank the government for funding this project. This goes in line with the government’s plan to ensure food security in the country. This project will also help reduce insecurity cases in this area,” said Mr. Lochakapong.
At the same time Mr. Lochakapong said by engaging in crop farming activities, the area residents will have an alternative income and shun overdependence on livestock which he said will reduce attacks from bandits who mainly target livestock.
“This Project will help my people stop depending mainly on livestock as their source of income, but also understand that they can gain a lot from crops,” he said.
The Lomut irrigation project which was launched on Saturday by the East African Community Affairs and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Askul is expected to benefit close to 3000 families through farming activities.
