Learning activities in secondary schools has finally kicked off after a week of standstill following the strike held by The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) to demand the implementation of the teachers’ Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA).

Addressing the press on Monday, KUPPET’s Secretary General Akelo Misori noted that the strike was suspended following a consultative meeting with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) where they entered a tentative agreement.

Mr. Misori directed KUPPET teachers to resume duties immediately as the union officials iron out the issues they had raised during the consultative meeting held with the teachers’ employer.

“In compliance with the court order which is upcoming on Thursday, from the union side, we suspend the strike and ask all our teachers to go back to class pending the speedy resolutions of these matters as already agreed on between us and the commission,” said Mr. Misori

On her part, the Teachers Service Commission CEO Nancy Macharia confirmed that the commission reached an amicable settlement with the union which will enable teachers to resume duty immediately.

However, Macharia confirmed that all teachers have benefited from the implementation of the second phase of the CBA which was due on July 1, 2024, with all the arrears settled.

“After a daylong meeting, we are happy to report to the nation that we have reached an amicable settlement which will enable our teachers to resume duty immediately. As promised on August 21st, 2021, the commission is today pleased to confirm that the government provided funds for implementation of the second face of the CBA with effect from 1st July 2024 and all our teachers have benefited,” she stated.
