Kakamega County Governor Fernandez Barasa has assured Kenyans that the construction of the second phase of the Bukhungu Stadium will be completed at the right time.

Meanwhile, the construction is being accelerated ahead of this years CHAN football championship, where Bukhungu is one of the stadiums that will be used.

“We have partnered with national government to ensure that we deliver we have already agreed with the contractor that he is going to come up with an acceleration plan,” said Fernandez.

Notably the government in October 2023 confirmed they have been handed the rights to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament in 2024.

Likewise, the government is hoping to use CHAN as a dress rehearsal to prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which will be hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

“As you are aware CHAN is being cohosted by our neighbouring countries Uganda and Tanzania and for Kenya this will be the venue,”said Fernandez.

At the time, Fernandez made his remarks when he visited the stadium to inspect the construction activities, the governor also said that they aim to improve the stadium to reach international stadiums standards.
