The impeachment motion passed by the national assembly against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked mixed reactions from across the country as he waits to appear before the Senate to present his defense.

Speaking to Kalya Digital, the former West Pokot County senator, Samwel Poghisio said that the move to remove Gachagua from office is politically motivated.

In addition, Mr. Poghisio criticized President William Ruto for remaining silent throughout the process despite his promise to protect his deputy.

“I think this is politics. But I don’t know why the president is allowing all this to happen when he promised that he would not allow his deputy to go through what he went through in the past regime,” said Mr. Poghisio.

Poghisio further expressed his fear that the removal of Mr. Gachagua from office may lead to turmoil in the leadership of President William Ruto, saying that the president must be careful with the road he is treading on.

“There may arise political turmoil in the leadership of President William Ruto following the removal of his deputy from office. What I can advise the president is to be careful in the whole process,” he said.

However, the former leader of the majority in the senate said that Gachagua’s journey has not yet come to an end as his hopes in the courts may be a solution for him to continue serving as the Deputy President for the remaining period before the end of President William Ruto’s first term in office.

“All is not over for Gachagua. He has moved to the court and his hopes in courts may bring him justice. So we wish him all the best,” he added.
