Charlen Ruto Calls West Pokot Female Students to Value Academics
By Benson Aswani,
West Pokot female students have been asked to observe discipline and not get involved in relationships that may affect their studies and kill their dreams in life.
President Wiliam Ruto’s daughter, Ms Charlen Ruto who had visited West Pokot for a three day visit from 18th March 2023 expressed her concerns for the girl child in West Pokot County.
At the time while speaking after meeting students from various schools at Tartar Primary School, Charlene Ruto stated that despite the fact that female students in the county are facing various challenges including FGM and early marriage, they should strive to achieve their dreams his.
“I know that in West Pokot county there is a challenge of female genital mutilation, early marriages and childhood pregnancies, but as girls we have to take care not to be tricked by someone into falling in love which may affect our studies,” said Charlene.
In addition, Charlene encouraged the students to focus on their talents apart from classroom studies, saying that through these talents they will be able to find opportunities that will enable them to make a living.
“It is important to put effort into studies but we should be aware that there are many other issues that will give us the opportunity to succeed in life such as talent among us,” she said.
Charlen was also accompanied by Governor Simon Kachapin’s son Kelvin Kachapin who in his remarks noted the shared interests he has with Charlen.
On his part, Kelvin Kachapin, encouraged the students to stay away from the use of drugs, which he says apart from affecting their future lives, is a great danger to their health.
“These days we have a bigger problem with the use of alcohol and drugs. My call to students is that we separate ourselves from this trait because apart from disrupting our future lives, it is more dangerous to health,” said Kelvin.
