Residents Term Rehabilitation Of Schools In Troubled Kerio Valley, A Catalyst To Normalcy

By Emmanuel Oyasi,

Lomut residents in Sigor constituency West Pokot County have lauded the rehabilitation of schools destroyed by bandits in border areas.

Speaking to Kalya Digital, Lomut residents led by Philip Pang’alan said this will help to ensure residents who fled from those areas return due to the calmness that is being witnessed.

Speaking on 6th December 2023, while assessing abandoned schools in the area, the Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki said a restoration process would be undertaken in the institutions.

Prof. Kindiki said schools to be reopened included Chesegon Primary School, Cheptulel Primary School, Cheptulel Boys Secondary School, and Sapulmoi Primary School.

“We thank the government for rehabilitating schools that were destroyed by bandits in the border areas of West Pokot County. This will encourage those residents who fled their homes due to insecurity to return,” said Pang’alan.

The area residents also asked West Pokot County leaders to ensure residents who deserted their homes due to insecurity, return to allow their children to return to school.

They further asked the government through the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to increase the number of National Police Reservists (NPR), to hasten the return to normalcy of activities in those areas.

“We appeal to the government to increase the number of NPR officers in those areas to enable activities to return to normal,” he said.

At the same time, Palang’an refuted claims that insecurity cases in the Kerio Valley region are mainly caused by residents from the Pokot community, insisting that they have been at the forefront of ensuring peace and harmony among the communities residing in those areas.
