Over 25 groups of farmers from different parts of West Pokot County have benefited from the Emergency Locust Response Program (ELRP) which aims to empower farmers economically.

The ELRP program launched on Monday at Chepareria, Pokot South Constituency saw the groups of farmers receive Galla goats, Dorper sheep, and beehives from the county government.

Speaking at Nasukuta, Governor Simon Kachapin said his government, in collaboration with other stakeholders, has prioritized farming activities as one way of ensuring food security as well as empowering farmers economically.

“We are giving these improved breeds to our farmers under the ELRP program that goes hand in hand with food systems. We are helping our farmers to improve their livestock for improved production,” said Mr. Kachapin.

Governor Kachapin said his government has invested in agro-business activities to strengthen the county’s economy.

“One of my agendas was to make sure that our farmers are empowered through agri-business, and I know by doing this, our economy will have a drastic growth,” he said.

The members of the groups that benefited under the ELRP program led by Komen Kapeli lauded the move which they said is essential for economic growth.

“We appreciate our Governor for considering us in his plans to make sure our county grows economically. We all know that agriculture is the key to any economy,” he said.
