The Drought Mitigation Workshop In Moroto, Uganda Comes To A Close

By Benson Aswani,

A five-day climate change, early warning system, and drought mitigation workshop held in neighboring Uganda, to offer training on determining and preparation for disasters, came to an end on Friday.

Leaders from various departments in West Pokot and Turkana Counties attended the workshop which was organized by the GIZ SCIDA III and IGAD organizations,

Speaking on the last day of the workshop organized in Moroto district, Karera district environmental officer Davis Ng’ole said that the training was key in dealing with the drought effects through new technology.

He said the invitation of government officials from different levels was an eye-opener to enlarge the scope of drought analysis in the region.

“Our invitation by ICPAC to this Particular training is very crucial, and because it is the center for early warning systems, we are going to be able to interface more with the new technology,” said Mr. Ng’ole.

Ng’ole further said that the decisions that will be made in the process of dealing with the effects of drought will be adequate and professionally researched.

“As we move out of this workshop, we are now sure that we will be able to produce information that is evidence-based for our leaders to make informed decisions on matters of climate change,” he said.

His statements were echoed by disaster management director, Turkana County Chilo Christopher, who further said that the knowledge acquired from a five-day training will help in reducing severity of disasters when they occur due to climate change.

“Once you have a group that understands their role and when to source for this information, it will lessen the adverse effects of the disaster when it occurs,” said Mr. Chilo.
